MERE FANCY DECEIVES THE PATIENT
One of the earliest placebo-controlled studies of complementary/alternative medicine (CAM) took place at the Mineral Water Hospital (Bath, UK) in 1799. The experiment was conducted by Dr Harwarth to test an invention by Dr Elisha Perkins of Connecticut. Perkins had patented a device consisting of two small, pointed rods made from 'secret alloys', one being the color of brass and the other of silver. When applied to the skin and stroked downwards and outwards, these metallic 'tractors' were supposed to relieve gout, rheumatism, headaches, epilepsy and many other disorders.
