The following is the opening statement of Rep. Tom Petri (R-WI), Aviation Subcommittee Ranking Republican, from today's hearing on air traffic control modernization efforts in the United States.
"This subcommittee first addressed the topic of today's hearing - air traffic control modernization - nearly a quarter-century ago during the first term of the Reagan Administration. Since then, the Federal Government has spent nearly $44 billion in taxpayer money on the quest to upgrade the nation's air traffic control system.
