In the wake of Consolidated Edison's request for a 17% residential rate hike, Assemblyman Michael Gianaris (D-Queens), introduced a package of legislation today in the State Assembly to reform electricity distribution by requiring Con Edison to face competition for the right to manage the New York City electric grid, and to mandate additional oversight by the Public Service Commission. The legislation is the result of recommendations formed by a State Assembly Task Force headed by Assemblyman Gianaris after the summer 2006 blackout in Queens.
