This collection of Civil War poetry is long overdue, joining the hundred thousand and more books on that war which must breed at least one book a day. This one is useful because it brings together all the contemporary and subsequent literary works on the war, the leaders (especially Lincoln), and many of the events. All of Whitman is there, so also Herman Melville, Longfellow, Lowell, Bryant, etc.; many of lesser stature, such as Bret Harte, Ambrose Beirce; and many post-war poets who have written on the subject: Sandburg, Warren, Masters, Dickey, Frost, etc. The collection is ...
