Pain has been described as the lowest common denominator of the human experience. It will touch the lives of everyone sooner or later and is deemed to be an integral part of life. In fact, pain may even be necessary for an organism's continued existence or survival. Pain is derived from the Latin term "poena" which translates to "punishment." The more accepted definition of pain adopted by the International Association for the Study of Pain is "an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with actual or potential tissue damage, or described in terms of such damage."
