The researchers hypothesized that professional designers/educators preferred masculine linguistic forms, and the general public preferred feminine forms. Using content analysis methodology, interior design periodicals and Home & Garden Television (HGTV) programs were coded for gender related linguistic concepts. The findings supported the original hypothesis and confirmed the presence of gender biased language variations in the profession. Developing a common language is necessary for continued advancement of the interior design profession; this study suggests possible reasons for discrepancies and strategies for unification.
