The Bedouin Ethnoarchaeological Survey Project (BESP) in southern Jordan was conducted between April 12 and May 10 1998.1 While earlier ethnoarchaeological surveys in the southern Levant have provided important data, they have been limited in certain respects: Investigations of Bedouin encampments have tended to focus on the identification and layout of tent camps.2 And much of the fieldwork that has been carried out has been conducted in a relatively restricted area, the vicinity of Petra (e.g. Banning and Kohler-Rollefson 1986: 157, 1992; Simms 1988). The BESP survey has sought to expand and enhance this body of data by using a different methodological approach.
