The Alabama Department of Education issued the following news release:
The National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) has announced its first group of Merit Scholars for 2007, including 12 Alabama public school students who have won corporate-sponsored Merit Scholarships through the annual National Merit Scholarship Program. Approximately 1,000 students nationwide have won Merit Scholarship awards financed by some 300 companies, foundations, and other business organizations. By the conclusion of this year's competition, some 8,200 academic champions will have won National Merit Scholarships worth over $34 million.
