The Colorado Department of Transportation issued the following press release:
A change in spring weather brought more than 10 inches of snowfall to Coal Bank, Molas and Red Mountain passes on US 550 since Tuesday. CDOT maintenance crews had swept the highway on Monday and Tuesday in preparation for the Iron Horse Bicycle Classic on May 26, but recent adverse weather caused a snow-packed and icy highway surface that required sanding.
