Formerly the British protectorate of Bechuanaland, Botswana adopted its new name upon independence in 1966. Since then, the country has transformed itself from an agricultural based economy into a nation consistently displaying one of the highest economic growth rates in the world. Botswana has enjoyed democracy and elections on a regular basis since independence, although the same party has always remained in power. The constitution is the overriding authority which is respected by all levels of society.
