Few scholars have given substantive attention to rural life in the twentieth-century South, particularly since World War ?. The reason stems, in part, from a lack of primary manuscript materials, some of which are only now being donated to archival collections. During the 1970s, however, historians began using oral histories to help overcome gaps in the historical documents.
