PRIOR RESEARCH ON VIOLENT CRIMES

Frequency of violent crimes by individuals has been measured in a sample of diverse societies. Murdock and White (1969)1 selected a world sample of 186 societies, each linguistically and geographically separated from the others. Ember and Ember (1992)2 applied to this sample a collection of ordinal scales on frequency of warfare and related measures. Two of the related measures are frequency of assault and frequency of homicide by individuals, rated on an ordinal scale of eight categories.
