Gov. Sarah Palin, R-Alaska, has issued the following proclamation:

Colorectal cancer is the second most common leading cause of cancer deaths in men and women combined in Alaska and the United States. Alaska Natives have the highest rate of colorectal cancer for both new cases and deaths of any population in the United States.

It is estimated that in the year 2007, 153,760 new cases of colorectal cancer will be diagnosed in the United States, and 270 of these will be Alaskans.

In the year 2007, this disease is expected to kill an estimated 52,180 individuals in this country. It is estimated that 70 Alaskans will die this year from colorectal cancer.
