The current pharmacopoeia oftopical treatments for ocular allergy comprises agents with antihistaminic and/or decongestant effects, mast-cell stabilizers, compounds with both antihistaminic and mast-cell stabilizing activity, and ariti-inflammatory/immunomodulatory drugs, either corticosteroids or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Medications with antihistaminic and mast-cell stabilizing effects are generally considered the treatment of choice for ocular allergy due to their distinct safety advantage compared with steroids and NSAIDs, and they are more efficacious than compounds that are solely mast-cell stabilizers or provide only decongestant and/or antihistaminic effects.
