Recent years have seen increasing support for animation production within China. However, the question remains as to how animation will develop-as an industrial product following the lead of industries in other countries or with uniquely 'Chinese' form and content. Actually, the pursuit of national style has been a central concern running through almost the entire history of Chinese animation, being derailed somewhat by the Cultural Revolution, but resuming in the 1980s. In this paper, I explain the essence of the Chinese style by comparing Chinese and western visual art traditions.
