Handling Reasonable Accommodation Requests

As a tax credit manager, you will encounter situations in which households ask you to make an exception to your rules to accommodate a household member's disability. Generally speaking, fair housing law requires you to grant such requests as long as they are reasonable, says Mark S. Alper, director of Compliance Services at the National Center for Housing Management.

Handling households' accommodation requests is an issue for all types of sites, notes Alper. But certain situations commonly arise at tax credit sites in which incorrectly granting-or not granting-an accommodation request could lead to fair housing liability and tax credit noncompliance, he cautions.
