After the hectic holiday season, it's time to unwind - and what better way than to curl up with a good book, reading about food and the culinary icons who have educated, teased and tempted us.
Here are a couple of recent publications I've found most enjoyable:
* Heirloom Baking with the Brass Sisters, by Marilynn and Sheila Brass (Black Dog and Leventhal Publishers, 2006). This is a collection of more than 100 years of recipes gathered from family cookbooks, journals, recipes found on scraps of paper and from their grandmother's kitchen. With themes such as "Coming to America," this book highlights a diverse culinary legacy, with more than 150 "found" dessert recipes dating from the late ...
