Article: EDUCATION WEEK WRONG AGAIN ABOUT HAWAII'S GRADUATION RATE

The Hawaii Department of Education issued the following news release:

Education Week has once again used incorrect data to present a false picture of Hawaii's public school graduation rate.

In "Diplomas Count: Ready for What?; Preparing Students for College, Careers, and Life After High School," released June 12, EdWeek reports that Hawaii has a 64.1% graduation rate (2004), which sharply contrasts with the Hawaii Department of Education's 2004 graduation rate calculation of 79.8%.

EdWeek had similar inaccuracies in their 2006 "Diplomas Count" report relating to 2003 graduation rates.

The problem stems from EdWeek's use of the "Cumulative Promotion Index" method to estimate graduation ...
