Article: Pegasus stage Delius' Koanga at Sadler's Wells

At die time of marking the 200th Anniversary of the outlawing of slavery in the United Kingdom, it was doubly appropriate that the Pegasus Opera Company should mount a new production of Delius' opera Koanga at Sadler's Wells Theatre, where I saw the second of three stagings, on 13 April.

The opera, composed in die late 1 890s, is an original masterpiece. It was Delius' third opera, at the time he was in Florida. Charles Keary's libretto is based on the 1880 novel The Grandissimes by George Washington Cable, the first performance being given in Elberfeld on 30 March 1904, although the opera then had to wait for Sir Thomas Beecham to conduct it at Covent Garden on 23 September 1935, since ...
