MANY BOATERS WANT TO GO CRUISING IN THE LOWER latitudes, but for some, hotspots such as Southern California and Florida are becoming just too crowded. Intrepid travelers are now looking south of the border to Mexico's Baja Peninsula, with its otherworldly juxtaposition of tropical sea and Sonoran Desert. Some boaters will cruise from the U.S. West Coast, harbor-hopping their way along a peninsula that is 100 miles longer than Italy and twice the length of Florida. A few trailer their boats down the 1,054-mile-long Transpeninsular Highway, and still others buy boats in Mexico.
