New Mexico Plans To Lengthen Care To Increase Probability Of Meth Rehab

New Mexico proposes to lengthen the period of treatment for convicted meth users, who would be directed into medical programs for six months or more.

Governor Bill Richardson has asked the legislature to support the proposal as a way to both reduce the prison population and keep meth users from committing new crimes to support their addictions.

Richardson estimated the treatment program would cost up to $20 million a year, but noted meth addiction is the most serious crime problem in New Mexico.
