FATHERS WHO ARE COURT-MANDATED TO ATTEND PARENTING EDUCATION GROUPS AT A CHILD ABUSE PREVENTION AGENCY: IMPLICATIONS FOR FAMILY THERAPY

ABSTRACT

Little is known about how fathers present themselves and what their concerns are when they are court-mandated to attend parent education groups. This article, based on two focus groups and ongoing clinical observations, reports that fathers often: are reluctant to engage with the group members and the leader, blame the system, feel misunderstood in relation to raising daughters in particular, assume a "macho" posture, have difficult interactions with the mother, are profoundly affected by how they were raised, and lack developmental knowledge about children. Suggestions for family therapy with these fathers are included.
