While South Floridians are waiting by their television sets in the numbingly tense days and hours before a hurricane strikes, coordination between two key response agencies is ramping up.

When hurricane driven rainfall is predicted by the National Hurricane Center in Miami, the South Florida Water Management District opens gates and spillways to make room for any influx of water.
