Blueberry Breeding: Improving the Unwild Blueberry

Abstract

The history, present status, and future challenges of blueberry (Vaccinium spp.) breeding are summarized, including breeding of highbush, rabbiteye and southern highbush blueberries.

The blueberry has become an important small fruit noted for its many health benefits and its flavor. The predominant types of blueberries grown commercially in the U. S. are highbush (Vaccinium corymbosum L.), lowbush (V. angustifolium Aiton), rabbiteye (V. ashei Reade), and finally the southern highbush (interspecific Vaccinium hybrids), which originated quite recently by crossing the highbush blueberry with several low chilling species native to the southeastern U.S. Another recent addition to the ...
