Article: MLA wants to wake up public accounts committee

MANITOBA politicians assigned to keep an eye on provincial government spending are asleep on the job.

But Conservative Len Derkach, chairman of the public accounts committee, said he wants to wake them up.

He freely admits he grudgingly took on the role last year. "It is frustrating," he said.

The committee will meet this week -- for only the third time this year. Compare that to Nova Scotia's public accounts committee which has already met 21 times.

Government House Leader Dave Chomiak refused to be interviewed. His spokesman said Chomiak would not debate the problem in public.
