The recent arrival of U.N. inspectors in Pyongyang, North Korea, is a reminder that nuclear proliferation, cross-border tensions and terrorist activity in the Asia-Pacific region pose long-term threats to the security of the United States. But the threat that looms largest may be Washington's preoccupation with events in the Middle East and lack of focus on the volatile Asia-Pacific, where this nation has vital interests and the prospect of conflict abounds.
North Korea's consent to close down a nuclear reactor at Yongbyon in return for 50,000 tons of heavy fuel is a welcome step. Additional steps are crucial.
