Somehow W. Fitzhugh Brundage has managed to write a fine and important book on the power of historical memory in the South since the Civil War without once quoting William Faulkner. Still, Faulkner' s sense that the southera past, present, and future were inescapably intertwined, an idea that refuted the Lost Cause version of regional history that reigned when Faulkner wrote his best books, haunts Brundage' s text like slaveholding ancestors trouble Faulkner's more contemporary characters.
