A new biosensor could speed pathogen detection
The Center For Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that 6.5 million illnesses and 9,000 deaths are caused annually hy bacterial food borne contamination in the United States.
Publicity of high-profile food poisoning incidents subjects the meat and poultry industry to mounting pressure to identify and control potential hazards caused by bacterial contamination. Part of the challenge, which faces the food industry and agencies charged with protecting public health, is to find better ways to identify contaminated products before being offered to consumers.
