PHILADELPHIA -- Up went the baseball, and down went Kyle Kendrick. The baseball had come off Garrett Atkins' bat like a bullet. Lord knows what its muzzle velocity was when Atkins -- 6-foot-3, 215 pounds, his swing all muscle and torque -- connected with an 88-mph fastball, but they seemed instantaneous -- the sound of the crack and the sight of Kendrick on his back on the pitcher's mound, his hands on his right knee, agony on his face. The ball, meanwhile, shot straight into the air like a toy rocket. Not that anyone noticed.
"I didn't see it," Kendrick said, "but I felt it."
