Article: SOUTH CAROLINA STUDENTS REMAIN AT OR NEAR NATIONAL AVERAGES ON FEDERAL MATH, READING TESTS

The South Carolina Department of Education issued the following news release:

South Carolina student performance on standardized tests required by the federal No Child Left Behind Act changed little between 2005 and 2007, the U.S. Department of Education announced today. The state's fourth- and eighth-graders remained near the national averages in math and slightly below the national averages in reading.

South Carolina's strongest 2007 performance was in math. The state's eighth-graders exceeded the national average score by two points (282 to 280 on NAEP's 500-point scale), and South Carolina performed higher than 16 states and about the same as 12 more. The state's fourth-graders missed ...
