New York, Sept. 26 -- A copy of the Magna Carta, the royal document revered as the birth certificate of freedom, will be presented for sale by Sotheby's here in December. The copy is dated 1297.
The Magna Carta is the charter that enshrined the rights of man into English law, and inspired the passion for liberty that flowered in the US in the 18th century and continues around the world. It is considered the most famous single document in existence.
The Magna Carta - Latin for 'Great Charter' - was originally issued in 1215 by King John. The copy offered by Sotheby's for sale was issued by King Edward I in 1297.
