A military sanitation practice at one of the most important archaeological sites on the Great Northern Plains was the beginning of a love affair for Lynelle Peterson in the mid1980s.
"That's when I fell in love with latrines," she said, laughing at the excitement of finding primary artifacts in the human excrement dumps at the site of Fort Union. "It really was exciting."
It was her first big project, and stretched over three digging seasons hi 1985-87
However, the disposal trenches were a late addition to the site as "there were no latrines until the military arrived in 1863-64."
