Article: National dementia strategy is planned

The government has announced the development of the first national dementia strategy and acknowledged that people affected by the illness are being let down by the current system.

There are currently around 600,000 people with dementia in England, which is expected to double in the next 30 years.

The government has identified three key areas where improvement in dementia services are needed:

* Better awareness - addressing the stigma of dementia in society and ensuring individuals and their family members recognise the early signs of dementia so symptoms are not wrongly attributed to 'old age'.
