face=-Bold; CAPE MAY COURT HOUSE - The county hired an architectural firm to design plans for enlarging an above-capacity jail, which officials believe may be leading to health and disciplinary problems among inmates.
The jail has a normal occupancy of about 180 inmates but has averaged about 300 inmates recently, county Administrator Stephen O'Connor said.
Freeholders on Tuesday approved a $25,000 study on expanding the jail.
O'Connor said this could include additions as well as reconfiguring the jail to allow more space.
