MSD stands for Multiple Spark Discharge, an advanced ignition system originally designed to ignite lean fuel mixtures. However, highperformance enthusiasts found the multiple spark discharge ignition, as it evolved from the capacitive discharge ignition, provided the additional benefits of smooth idle, fewer emissions, and the big plus-more power.
As a precursor to MSD, Autotronic Controls Corp. (AGO was founded in 1970 as a research and development company by two engineers from White Sands (New Mexico) Missile Range. The men and their other partners were working on a lean-burn fuel system called Electrasonic Fuel Induction to help increase fuel economy of new and older automobiles.
