ALEXANDRIA, Va., Oct. 30 -- Brad Davis of Longmont, Colo., has developed a method for assigning data rate.

According to the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office, the invention relates to a "method of assigning transmission data rate in a multi-channel communication system based upon a comparison between projected transmitter power output for transmission at a selected data rate, and the maximum transmitter power capability. Relative power requirements for high and low processing gain channels are stored in a look-up table (LUT) in memory, for a variety of data transmission rates.
