The Investigation of a Sensor System for the Measurement of Temperature Distribution Based on Light Backscattering

RBR recently finished a feasibility study for a new distributed-temperature sensor for oceanography and environmental measurements. The project aims to develop an innovative temperature sensor system for the oceanographic community that can measure the temperature distribution along a fiber optic cable. This measurement technique is based on fiber optic time domain reflectometry (FOTDR).

In FOTDR, the elapsed time and the intensity of the reflected light is measured and can be used to determine the weak point of a fiber, with a resolution down to one-tenth of a meter. FOTDR ...
