SUMMARY
There are many challenges associated with lead-free PCBs, and they need our full attention. Critical PCB material characteristics must be understood and adequate testing performed for lead-free reliability.
An IPC lead-free report1 called lead-free implementation "do-able," and industry concerns and testing have focused on solder joint, component, and PCB reliability, and there's been some anxiety about tin whiskers. Regarding solder joint reliability, my experience so far has been good; no unexpected failures. The same is true with components and tin whiskers, although tin whiskers are still a long-term concern.
