"The Hurva" synagogue in Jerusalem - started, abandoned, destroyed, rebuilt, and razed again - is about to undergo a "new-old" resurrection.
VISITORS TO THE JEWISH QUARTER HERE (KNOWN IN HEBREW AS "harova") can't help but notice the old-new Hurva Synagogue now under construction. When completed in two years it will be the largest and most prominent building in the rova.
The distinctive structure, with its landmark dome, was Jerusalem's main Ashkenazi house of prayer from 1864 until May 27,1948. At that time, it was dynamited by soldiers of Jordan's Arab Legion when they captured the Jewish Quarter redoubt during Israel's War of Independence.
