World regulators reject plan to temporarily ban bluefin tuna catch

A proposal for a temporary fishing ban to protect the Atlantic bluefin tuna from over-harvesting was recently rejected by the international organization that regulates tuna fisheries, and a local representatitive for U.S. fishing interests called the group's alternative suggestion a compromise.

Instead of an outright ban, the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas decided to require nations that fish for eastern Atlantic and Mediterranean bluefin tuna to submit detailed reports next year on how they will comply with current fishing regulations, according to a news release from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association.
