The legendary Sidney Poitier discussed his life, career and philanthropic contributions during an Oct. 3 appearance at Ohio State University's Mershon Auditorium.
As an Academy Award-winning actor, director, producer and best-selling author, Poitier's career spans a half-century and has earned him many honors, including being knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 1968.
His classic films include "The Blackboard Jungle," "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner," "To Sir, With Love," and "In the Heat of the Night." He became the first Black actor to. win an Academy Award, for "Lilies of the Field," in 1963. He was active on stage, screen and in the civil rights movement.
