Although the birth of NuSun oil was a textbook story (see article at right), the oil had to go through a lot of growing pains during the initial few years. Several factors were involved, including the focus of the food industry (including snack food) on no-oil and low-oil products and the general lack of corporate interest in innovative, nutritious oils.
Also, the price of NuSun oil was significantly higher than that of soybean and cottonseed oil owing to:
* Growers' premium to encourage planting of NuSun seeds;
* Identity-preserved production;
* Additional processing costs for seed segregation, pre- and postreduction cleanup at the refinery;
