London, Dec. 2 -- The biggest white truffle unearthed in half a century has fetched a record 165,000 pounds at an auction.

The 1.5kg "Tuber magnatum Pico" was discovered in the hills near Pisa last month by Cristiano and Luciano Savini, professional truffle hunters, and is thought to be the largest white truffle ever found.

The truffle was sold to a Chinese gambling entrepreneur, Stanley Ho, during a fierce bidding war with the artist Damien Hirst, at the annual International Tuscan Truffle Auction.
