GERRE HANCOCK, Holy Week (I. Palm Sunday; U. Maundy Thursday; HI. Easter Day) for Two Organs. Paraclete Press, PPM 00714. $45. This work was commissioned by the First Congregational Church in Columbus, Ohio, which has a IV/73 Kimball (1931) in the chancel, and a 111/47 von Beckerath (1972) in the gallery. The composer has drawn upon the sacred-historic events of Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday, and Easter Day as the basis for a dramatic musical triptych. The first movement runs in continuous motion throughout. The principal idea consists of Lydian passagework and cross-rhythmic passagework in one part, with sustained open fifths in the other part, and this is repeated in a higher key with the ...
