September 11, 2007 marks the six-year anniversary of extraordinary change that has challenged local law enforcement to engage a new mission: homeland security. What is this mission and how much do we know about it? The inability of law enforcement executive education to keep up with the rapid pace of change in the post-9/11 environment has resulted in a homeland security knowledge gap. The problem is multifaceted; it may include uncertainty about the commitment to the homeland security mission by local law enforcement, a lack of defined core knowledge, a shortage of knowledgeable instructors, and the rapid pace of change itself.
