Article: Benefit concert to aid ailing folk singer

MEMBERS of Manitoba's music community are staging a fundraising benefit concert Saturday for Utah Phillips, one of folk music's elder statesmen.

Phillips -- folk singer, storyteller, and poet -- tours nearly 120 cities each year but was forced off the road by congestive heart failure.

His Manitoban folk music brethren who have been influenced by his music want to help cut Phillips's medical expenses now that he can no longer tour.

Mitch Podolak, Winnipeg Folk Festival founder and benefit concert organizer, said all of the musicians contacted agreed to perform at Saturday's benefit concert.
