In response to awater shortage in the Sasebo area, the amphibious assault ship USS Essex (LHD 2) launched Landing Craft Air Cushions (LCAC) from assault craft Unit 5, Dec. 11, carrying six Tactical Water Purification Systems (TWPS) to their Sakibe facility.
The systems will be used to ease Commander Fleet Activities Sasebo's (CFAS) reliance on water from Sasebo-area reservoirs.
Sasebo City has been in a drought for the past four months, and as of Dec. 9, reservoirs had dropped to 54 percent.
