Article: Beattie Has More Clout, Challenges as Mazda Chief Carmaker Running All U.S. Operations From Irvine HQ

New Mazda North American Operations chief Richard Beattie has more authority than any U.S. executive in the company's history - and he'll need every bit of it to pull the Irvine-based car company out of a five-year tailspin.

Beattie, 42, was named president and CEO of the new unit five months ago and is the point man for a reorganization that consolidated four formerly separate units in the North American market: sales and marketing, research and development, systems support and a corporate liaison office. Those units, along with Mazda's subsidiary in Canada, now report directly to Beattie, who in turn reports to Henry Wallace, president of parent Mazda Motor Corp. in Hiroshima, Japan.
