THE gifts are fun and sometimes a tad exotic. Llamas, water buffalo, heifers, pigs, honeybees, geese, ducks and chicks -- not to mention the option of tree seedlings.

Those are among the gift ideas offered by Heifer International, a non-profit organization dedicated to tackling hunger around the world by giving families the tools and training needed to produce their own food instead of relying on short-term relief.

Most people correctly assume the donations, ranging from $500 for a heifer to $30 for a beehive, are used to provide livestock and other food sources to impoverished Third World families.
