Over the past five years there has been a 16 percent increase in the number of blacks who applied to U.S. medical schools. But despite a pressing need for more black physicians, both the number of black students accepted to medical school and the number who enrolled have dropped over the past five years.

Black enrollments in medical school remain significantly below the levels achieved a decade ago.
